Restore Your Skin with Microneedling
Facial rejuvenation procedures are designed to turn back time on the face and restore a healthy, radiant glow without surgery. These treatments work in a variety of ways, exfoliating and infusing lost nutrients to the dermal layers to revive the complexion. Some procedures work with the body’s processes to turn back time on a cellular level. Microneedling, which is available at Rodeo Surgical Art, falls into the cellular level category, producing natural rejuvenation results that are long-lasting.
What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a non-surgical procedure that addresses signs of aging and other skin damage to produce a refreshed appearance. Also known as collagen induction therapy, this procedure stimulates the body’s rejuvenation processes to increase collagen and elastin production, and enhance the overall look of the skin.
The device utilizes a collection of very fine needles, which penetrate the skin and create micro-injuries to serve as the catalyst for the renewal process.
Collagen and elastin are two critical substances that reside in the dermal layers and create a firm, supple look to the skin. As early as our 20s, our bodies start to produce less of these substances, which leads to skin laxity and the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. The ability to boost collagen and elastin levels efficiently reverses the effects of time on the dermis and restores skin to its youthful state.

What can it treat?
Microneedling is a versatile treatment that can address any or all the following concerns: Subtle lines and wrinkles, pigmentation irregularities, shallow scarring, including pitting acne scars, enlarged pores, uneven skin texture and tone, and stretch marks.
While microneedling is commonly performed on the face, it also offers benefits to damaged areas of skin like the chest, neck, back and the backs of the hands. Before your treatment, Dr. Mashhadian will make a careful assessment of the condition of your skin and the results you hope to achieve. This way, he can determine whether microneedling will be the best choice for accomplishing your personal aesthetic goals.
How is it performed?
Microneedling is an outpatient procedure we offer right in the office of Rodeo Surgical Art. Before treatment, a topical anesthetic will be applied to the skin to numb the treatment area. Once that takes effect, a small device resembling a pen will be moved across the skin’s surface. The pen delivers multiple needle penetrations, which are set to the precise depth needed to achieve full results. There is minimal discomfort throughout the procedure thanks to the numbing cream, and the entire procedure may take anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour, depending on the size of the treatment area. Depending on the specific skin concerns, Dr. Mashhadian may make more than one pass using the device, which will take longer but also yield more dramatic results when appropriate.
Microneedling may be performed alone, but it can also be combined with the infusion of a topical serum to provide additional correction and enhancement. These serums are applied before microneedling, so the needles can work the beneficial ingredients further into the dermal layers where it can have the most significant effect. There are different serums to choose from that allow us to tailor your treatment to your precise needs.
Are there any risks or side effects?
Like any medical procedure, there are some risks and side effects associated with microneedling. The most common side effect is redness, swelling, and tenderness around the treatment site, which will subside within a day or two in most cases. Patients often liken it to a sunburn. Risks of microneedling, which are very rare, include bruising, bleeding, infection and scarring. You can significantly reduce your risks associated with this procedure – and enhance your results at the same time – by choosing an experienced provider like Dr. Mashhadian for your treatment.
Is downtime needed after treatment?
There is no real downtime after a microneedling procedure. Most of our patients can return to work right away or the next day. Any redness or swelling can be hidden under makeup after the first 24 hours. There is no significant discomfort after microneedling to prevent you from resuming all your regular activities. In fact, the lack of downtime is one of the biggest benefits of microneedling, since you can achieve positive, long-lasting results without putting a significant strain in your daily routine.
It is critical to protect your skin from sun exposure in the early days after microneedling since the treated skin can be more vulnerable to damage. Dr. Mashhadian can also recommend medical-grade skin care products to use at home that will promote healing and enhance the final results of your procedure.
What can I expect from my results?*
Some patients notice an immediate improvement to the skin after their microneedling treatment. However, the outcome of the procedure will usually take six to eight weeks to develop fully as the body’s healing response works to restore and refresh the complexion. While you may see positive results after a single appointment, we typically recommend a series of three to five sessions, spaced monthly, to achieve the best possible outcome. At that point, one or two touch-up treatments per year should be sufficient for maintaining your healthy glow.
Is microneedling right for me?
Microneedling is appropriate for all skin tones and can even be safely and successfully used for sensitive skin types. While microneedling offers numerous benefits for the right patient, it is not the best choice for everyone.
Your decision to undergo microneedling will depend on your specific concerns and the aesthetic goals you currently have. If Dr. Mashhadian determines microneedling will not give you the results you are hoping for, he will offer additional non-surgical options designed to refresh and rejuvenate the complexion.
One of those treatments might be a better option for you. If you are tired of your dull, tired complexion, maybe now is the time to take action.
